A Look at Our History…
Patoka Valley Health Care Cooperative began in 1993, when a small group of local business leaders came together to tackle rising health care costs. At a time when national conversations about universal health care were stirring concern, these employers shared a common vision: keeping healthcare locally managed, responsive, and affordable. What started as informal discussions quickly grew into a vibrant community effort, bringing together over 100 civic leaders, employers, employees, and residents.
With the help of a consultant in 1994, the group transformed their vision into a community-based program that allowed employers to provide cost-effective health care to their employees. The Cooperative was incorporated that May, originally named “Patoka Valley Regional Health Care Cooperative,” later shortened to Patoka Valley Health Care Cooperative. In 2004, the Cooperative expanded to serve employers offering fully insured plans, broadening access while staying true to its cooperative roots.
From its first day of operation on January 1, 1995, with just 1,800 insured employees, the Cooperative has grown to serve over 30,000 individuals today. A dedicated team including a full-time Executive Director, Administrative Assistant, UR Nurse, and part-time Medical Director supports the network while ensuring coordinated, cost-effective care.
At its heart, Patoka Valley Health Care Cooperative is more than a healthcare program - it’s a partnership. By connecting local providers, businesses, and residents, the Cooperative strengthens communities, improves health outcomes, and ensures that quality care stays close to home.
